Blog #1 The Wild

If you care about the environment at all, then you have heard, at least once, that natural forests and other wild life areas are disappearing fast. To be more explicit, “ten percent of the world’s wilderness has disappeared since the 1990s” (“World’s Wilderness Has Disappeared” 1). That means that in only 20 years, ten percent has vanished. Imagine how that percentage can exponentially increase within the next few decades. Soon enough, wild life, rain forests, and other lands will be scarce. There is not just one person or source to blame, there are many causes to the loss. For one, "rapid urbanization and agriculture in many places" ("World's Wilderness Has Disappeared" 1) causes destruction to the wild life. Natural, some being uncontrollable, causes include "climate change, wildfires, roads, mining, and fossil fuel extraction. Rapid loss of wilderness, hand in hand, is contributing to climate change and species depletion, according to scientists" ("World's Wilderness Has Disappeared" 1). To be more specific, the plant and animal life are suffering as well. Certain species of animals may become endangered due to loss of habitation. Although “forests and grasslands can return, wilderness cannot" (Haddid 1). If people do not take initiative and protect the wilderness, it will soon be gone. This would impact the environment in so many harmful and irreversible ways. Could you picture what life would be like without your favorite animal or flower? How could this affect the environment? Taking away key components of a food chain or cycle would create a major problem that can not be undone. Thus it is vital to do what you can to help now in order to prevent these crisis in the future. Take charge before it is too late.
