South Korea; Crisis between nations
About 6 months ago, North Korea(DPRK) started an event that would create havoc among the nations surrounding it. On February 7, 2016 North Korea successfully launched a satellite in to orbit. This accomplishment of North Korea also indicated their ability to launch long range missiles to other countries including the US. During the following week, South Korea(ROK) began to consider installing US's THAAD(Terminal Hight Altitude Area Defense) system as a countermeasure. This decision of South Korea eventually creates tension between the US, South Korea, and China. China shows opposing opinion on the matter of the defense system. China's number one concern with THAAD was the United States undermining China's own security. Installing the defense system in South Korea puts China in range of the THAAD radar, which China feels could be a threat. Once South Korea decided to install THAAD at the city of SeongJu, China tried to retaliate by canceling many of the South Korean K-pop events and broadcasts.
However the government of China wasn't the ones opposing the installment of THAAD. The actual safety of the radar has not been proven to be harmless, and so the citizens of SeongJu feared the radar from the THAAD system might have a negative effect on their health. Many Citizens of South Korea also felt betrayal from their government due to the fact that the whole decision of THAAD installment was without the consent of the citizens of South Korea. While some feel that the installment of THAAD could begin a potential cold war like tension between the South and North Korea. There are still disputes about whether or not the decision on THAAD might have been too hasty. I, for one, am on the opposing side of the THAAD, what do all of you think?
