Zendaya alleges grocery clerk refused to sell her gift cards because of her 'skin tone' - Is Zendaya being stereotyped?

In a recent supermarket named Vons in Arcadia, California, the 20-year-old actress, singer and dancer Zendaya Coleman claimed she was racially profiled. Zendaya stated that the grocery clerk refused to sale her $400 in gift cards because she “couldn’t afford the gift cards” and tossed her wallet. In several SnapChat videos, Zendaya stated that, "The lady that was helping, I don't think she was a huge fan of our skin tone.” Later, a manager came over to assist Zendaya and listened to her problem and kindly stated that there is a limit for the gift cards and then apologized for the inconvenience and the misunderstanding. The grocery clerk’s gesture did signify that she was not interested in serving Zendaya and by her harsh statement in my own personal opinion, it does indicate that because of the color of her skin she cannot afford to spend $400 worth of money on gift cards. From being a fan of Zendaya as well as following her on Instagram, I have seen how she has always been positive, uplifting and supportive of women and her background. I came across yet another video that stereotypically judged Zendaya. In the picture that I posted of her with the ‘faux locks’ in her hair, an E! Host, Giuliana Rancic from the show, “Fashion Police” states, “I think she smells of patchouli oil and weed.” Later, after Zendaya posted a response on Instagram stating that the stereotype was outrageously offensive, Rancic later apologized for her comment. These stereotypes have shown me that no matter the color of our skin, or how we style our hair, poor judgement, racism and hate is and always will be prevalent in this country and it is up to us to deal with or accept it.
