Fun "We Are Young"

The song “We Are Young,” could possibly be trying to convey a message about being young and reckless and enjoying the night. But that’s if you’ve only heard the very catchy chorus, and not actually ever paid attention to the lyrics.

The first verse begins with, “Give me a second I, I need to get my story straight,” because after a wild night the main character is attempting to remember what actually happened that night. In the first verse alone, we hear about drugs, lies, drinking, and domestic violence. The fifth line, “My seats been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar/ And I know I gave it to you months ago/ I know you’re trying to forget,” makes you question whether this could be a physical scar or just an emotional scar caused by the ending of a relationship? It could be both but the music video suggests it’s a physical scar.

The song starts pretty fast paced with a drum in the background. Towards the end of the first verse the song slows down, and then returns without the drums, still slow and with a more dramatic feel to the words being said. The end of the first verse almost makes you forget everything you just heard in the beginning of the verse because it’s catchy and the lyrics, “So if by the time the bar closes/ and you feel like falling down/ I’ll carry you home tonight,” almost suggests a romance between the main character and possibly the girl he gave a scar to.

That is until the second verse, which goes back to a fast pace, except this verse introduces the idea of cheating, which could be the reason behind the physical scar mentioned in the first verse, with the lyrics, “Now I know that I’m not/ all that you got.” The next two lines, “But our friends are back/ so let’s raise a toast,” indicate they have momentarily stopped the argument because their friends have arrived. This verse ends with the character admitting that there’s another person "carrying him home that night."

The music video includes violence, a lot of it, suggesting that the scar is a physical scar due to domestic violence between the couple. It begins when a women gets hit with in the back of a the head with a wine bottle, and ends with the woman walking out of the bar and getting hit with a bar stool by a man.

This song isn’t actually about being young and reckless or enjoying the night, it’s about domestic violence, drugs, alcohol, lying and cheating.
