Savannah Crawford's Blog Post #2

“The Worst” is a hit R&B song by Jhene Aiko released on her album “Sail Out” in 2013. Jhene tells Radio.com that the song's video, which finds Aiko being busted for murder, is a metaphor for her "killing those feelings" that she had for her former boyfriend. In the beginning of the video, the viewers are shown the police riding to her house because they have been called for an emergency. The song is introduced with Aiko questioning the boyfriend, asking him to repeat himself because what she is hearing from him could be a turn for the worst, hence the title. Jhene is leaning up against the walls as the lights from the police cars are flashing, which gives the viewer an idea that they have arrived to the murder scene. The blood on her hands signifies she murdered him. In the hook of the song, Aiko says, “I don’t need you (4X), But I want you, I don’t mean to (4X), But I love you” which is repetitive throughout different parts of the song. Aiko used repetition to signify the mere point in the song, she knew she did not need to get involved with him but the feelings were stronger than she ultimately imagined.
In the second bridge, she tells him he wasn’t special until she made him so but she’s tired of running away. The “running” that she is doing isn’t literal but she finds herself always running from the pain that hurt her. Lastly, in the last verse, the viewers get a different view on her feelings. Aiko goes from singing in a melodic tune to freestyling in a way. She states, “Everybody’s like, he’s no item, please don’t like em, he don’t wife em, he one nights em”, in this part of the song, we are introduced to what everyone around her is trying to convince her of, which is staying away from this man in the first place. Aiko’s style, voice and her experiences allow her fans to be able to relate and connect with her music on another level which made this song such a hit.
