Blog Post #2- "Lost Ones"

“Lost Ones” by J. Cole

Lyrics     Video

To begin with, once thoroughly listening to the song, I came to a brief description. J. Cole confronts the challenges young adults are faced with when an accidental pregnancy occurs. In this song, J. Cole acts as the boyfriend who impregnates a woman, presumably his beloved girlfriend. J. Cole describes this argument that is common amongst young couples when the female in the relationship gets pregnant unplanned. It is easier for the guy to resort to abortion since he won’t be enduring the surgery and emotions afterwards. The woman, on the other hand, argues that he doesn’t hold the gift or power to decide to take a life away or even suggest so. She isn’t understanding how he could dare back away from the situation considering the conversations they previously held about his father being absent. This song is definitely intended for couples who come across this same situation and don’t know what to do. The way J. Cole expresses this is by informing the listeners of both sides of the argument being made.

The rhyme scheme in the lyrics isn’t specific, it varies throughout the song. However, he ends groups of sentences rhyming or with the same word. He uses literary devices such as similes, point-of-view, irony, and allegory. This song is very successful in getting the point across to the listeners. I appreciate how he fairly and accurately explores both sides of the fight. J. Cole states why either sides could be favorable by both men and women. I really enjoy this song because of how truthful and relevant it is. In present day, this struggle of rather to keep the baby, get married, separate, or work through is always prevalent, or common. This song could open minds and positively encourage someone in the struggle and help them overcome it. Though I haven’t had to deal with this personally, this song still teaches me how to could be avoided and dealt with.
