Brina Martinez Post #1

This is Brock Turner, a former swimmer at Stanford, he was convicted, in March, for sexually assaulting an unconscious, intoxicated woman behind a dumpster at a fraternity party.

Two men walking by at the time of the incident found Turner penetrating the unconscious, intoxicated female. They pulled him off of her and he tried to run, except he was tripped and held down until the police came.

Brock Turner is a student at Stanford. He is a swimmer with whatever record time he has. But he’s also a rapist. Except that no headline mentioned that. All the headlines like the ones in Associated Press, USA Today, TIME, CNN, Sports Illustrated, MSNBC, and the BBC fail to mention his crime and only mention that he is a former swimmer at Stanford. It even took 3 months for his mugshot to be released. This criminal behavior shouldn't be unexpected from Turner; he has a history of alcohol and drug abuse and he was arrested before for drinking underage and having a fake driver’s license. He also tried to run from that situation.

Turner should have been convicted for at least 14 years for the three charges he had for sexually assaulting a woman. But the prosecutors asked for 6 years. The judge sentenced him to only 6 months in jail because longer sentence would have a “severe impact on him." Turner only served 3 months. But the judge forgot to mention the impact on the woman who is the victim.

Consent and justice are important. There wasn’t any consent. And Turner should have faced a longer sentence. He took advantage of the fact that she was extremely drunk, and he got away with a very lenient sentence for "good behavior."
